Potato Festival at Brukenthal Palace
Potato Festival at Brukenthal Palace | Avrig (30 August 2025)
The Brukenthal Palace celebrates the POTATO, the miracle vegetable that defeated famine in Europe.
The first potatoes in Southeast Europe were grown in the gardens of the Brukenthal Palace in Avrig.
Shortly afterwards, a circular issued by the governor’s administration was sent to all regions of Transylvania with a recommendation to replace cereal crops with potatoes. The effects of this circular represented an innovative policy for Europe at that time, given that in Western Europe potatoes were planted as decorative flowers in the spring.
Every weekend in September and October, the annual potato festival takes place at the Brukenthal Palace in Avrig. In the garden of Brukenthal Castle, potato specialties from around the world, lamb and pork chops, delicacies from the hot oven, and vegetables and fruits from the rich harvest of Transylvania are on offer.
